The Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery is one of the best known and most relevant museums in the world. In this monumental building there’s a wonderful collection of inestimable masterpieces mainly coming from the Medici family collection, but lately enriched thanks to donations and legacies.
Who is the visit to the Uffizi recommended for
Groups and individuals.
When can you visit the Uffizi?
Morning or afternoon. Visits may last 2 to 4 hours. Of course it is not possible to see all the works in one visit and selections will have to be made.
What happens during my visit at the Uffizi?
The Uffizi is one of the world’s first museums. It was founded in 1582 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francis 1st and the collection was initially only hosted in the eastern wing, the frescoed rooms and in the Tribune; the Duke’s secluded place, where he could admire his collection’s favourite pieces.
The gallery was turned into a public museum in 1769 thanks to the Grand Duke Leopold.
Nowadays the Uffizi collections are organised into many sections (Roman statues, drawing, prints, portraits, the Vasari corridor…) but the most famous is, no doubt, the painting collection hosting masterpieces by Giotto, Cimabue, Masaccio, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Canaletto, Velasquez, Van Dyck to mention but a few.
Uffizi first-timers should concentrate on a tour of the most famous works, while experienced visitors might enjoy more a themed tour, like Mediaeval painting, The Renaissance for example, or tell me what their preferences are and I will work out a personalised tour with them.
